June Native Plant Sale - Fletcher Wildlife Garden

After a long cold winter, spring is finally here and thoughts are turning to gardening! If you are interested in learning more about plants native to the region, we have a great resource in central Ottawa. The Fletcher Wildlife Garden is located next to the Arboretum off Prince of Wales Drive. If you would like to purchase some native plants for your garden, the Fletcher Wildlife Garden's annual native plant sale is coming up on Saturday June 7th from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Their website outlines why the project got started:  "With habitat loss a major factor in the decline of many plant and animal species, our goal is to encourage as many people as possible to create or restore natural landscapes on their urban or rural property. Our Interpretive Centre disseminates information on conservation issues and regional natural history. Behind the centre is our Backyard Garden designed to show how anyone can transform their own garden into one that is wildlife friendly".

The Case for Green Buildings

As my clients and readers know, I have a strong interest in green buildings and energy efficiency. I am a LEED Accredited Professional (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and an Accredited Green Agent with the National Association of Green Agents and Brokers. I was interested in read this recent article from the real estate news exchange on the clear case for green buildings. As expert and investor Greg Kats says “Today almost half of new construction, non-residential by square footage, is designed to LEED or equivalent standard. So it is a dramatic confirmation that this is really a demand-driven interest that people want to and are willing to pay a premium for.”
